How to Photography Jewelry Using a Nikon Coolpix S9100?

I am trying to photograph jewelry using a Nikon Coolpix S9100. I am laying the pieces on a black background. There is a lot of glare coming off the gold and diamonds. All images are hazy-not crisp. How can I take better photos of the items?

Answer:

Without knowing the settings you are using and seeing actual examples it is hard to give precise answers but here are some general tips.
For product photography, like jewelry, it is helpful to have a simple light box setup so you can correctly light the product with a soft diffused light. You can buy inexpensive light boxes designed for product photography or you can make your own using some type of fabric to diffuse the light and some common desk lamps or clamp on flood lamps.
The key to product photography is to have a good light source. It sounds like you are getting glare from your flash or maybe your light source is too harsh. The easiest way to avoid that is to diffuse the light either with a flash modifier or as already mentioned a light box.
Once you have the correct lighting it is a matter of getting your camera settings set correctly. If your photos are hazy it could be that the camera is not focusing on the subject correctly or you might have some motion blur if your camera settings are not correct.
I would recommend you do an online search looking for examples of a Product Lightbox or Light Tent. You will find there are several commercial products available as well as a number of plans and videos on how to build your own.
